The Catholic Alcoholic
by Deacon Roy Barkley.
166 pages, paperback, reissued 2003.

Self-help based solidly on Catholic moral theology. No
preaching, just clear reasoning.

The Catholic Alcoholic gives a widely read, incisive look at
the problem of alcoholism written from the point of view of
the Catholic understanding of the human person, made in
the image of God. The book examines the harm that
alcoholism does to the individual, the family, and society,
and points the way to recovery. It relies not upon “rules”
but upon the Church’s understanding of the human
person, who can be hurt and limited by destructive habits.

The Catholic Alcoholic
has inspired many alcoholics and
other addicts to recover. In addition to sufferers from
substance addictions, it has been used by those with
behavioral addictions—to pornography and gambling, for
instance—as a help to recovery. It has been featured on
EWTN, the Catholic television network.

The book has also been used as a college text and in
retreat centers. It is an ideal aid to alcoholics, and to their
families and friends.

The late Monsignor George A. Kelly said that he wished he
had had
The Catholic Alcoholic to use when he was a
young priest.
The Wanderer called the book “a profound
journey” of faith. Professor Germain Grisez praised
The
Catholic Alcoholic
and cited it in his magisterial moral
theology text,
Living a Christian Life.

The Catholic Alcoholic, which was originally published in
1990, has been reissued by Stephen Efrem More
Publishing.
